One of the best experiences I had in school was the time I spent in elementary school because of all of the great teachers I had and the wonderful opportunities they offered me.

One of my fondest memories of elementary school was being a part of the permanent decorations in the school. The first time I did this was when they decided to put a giant mural in the cafeteria, they had all of the kids paint a section of it, and the second time is when they replaced the wall in one of the hallways with a self-portrait tile that each student drew of themselves in art class. If I went back to my elementary school today, I would still be able to point out which area of the painting I helped with, and I could tell you exactly where my tile is on the wall. These experiences in elementary taught me a lot about the importance of a community atmosphere in school. I will always be connected to that school in some way because my artwork makes up some of those walls. When I was making the tile and painting the mural, even at that age, I knew that I was part of something big. It gave me a sense of security and purpose, and sense of belonging to the school.

Another important thing that I learned from my experiences in elementary and middle school was the importance of the importance giving opportunities to student whether they are in the special education system or in a gifted class. My school system was always praised for the opportunities that they give to all students. As a participant in the gifted and talented program, I can say that this program challenged me in ways that my regular classes in elementary and middle school did not. My school also gave opportunities to inner city school kid, who would not have gotten the same education in the schools that were in their district, by busing them into our school district. My middle school was also the only middle school in my town that offered special education programs, so they took pride in offering as much as they could for them because they came from across town to be in school there.

One of my most influential teachers was my first grade teacher, Ms. Michaud. First grade was a tough year for me; I had a lot of disciplinary issues and was probably not the most enjoyable student to deal with. Based on all of this you probably assume that Ms. Michaud hated me as a student; actually it was the exact opposite. She took a liking to me and we still exchange emails up to this day. She was my most influential teacher to me because she never wrote me off as a brat or a bad kid. She gave me a chance and shaped me into the student she knew I could be and she really made me the student I am today.

My elementary and middle school experience taught me a lot, mostly what it takes to have a great school filled with teachers that care about their job. I know I was fortunate to go to a school with as much opportunity like mine had and I am truly grateful for all that I learned from them.
